I’ve always loved discovering fragrances that fly a little under the radar, and Ex Nihilo’s Santal Calling is exactly that - less mainstream, but seriously beautiful. This was my first bottle from Ex Nihilo, so I wanted to start with the original blend before getting creative with their customization options (side note: you can actually infuse other notes into your bottle at select locations, like Bergdorf Goodman in NYC, which is such a fun way to make a scent your own).
Santal Calling opens with this soft, tonic-like note and a gentle kick of nutmeg. It’s sweet and milky, but not in an overtly gourmand way - think creamy with a nutty undertone, like the scent equivalent of a warm, spiced almond milk latte. There’s a musky grain and a hint of fig that peek through, making it feel plush and just a little bit mysterious. The amber in the background adds a subtle warmth that doesn't take over, and lingers quietly.
As it settles, I really notice the powdery iris, which gives it this elegant, almost vintage softness. It’s not powdery in a makeup-y way, but more like a gentle haze that ties together the creamy sandalwood and the floral heart. The rose is there, but it’s subtle - more of a supporting character than the star of the show.
The drydown is where Santal Calling really shines for me. The sandalwood is ultra-smooth and creamy, wrapped up with musk and vanilla, so the whole profile feels comforting and refined. It’s sweet, but not cloying, and there’s a modern, clean edge to it that keeps it from feeling heavy or old-fashioned. I get why people say it’s addictive.
The unsung hero of this fragrance is how truly wearable it is. It has enough depth to work year-round, but the creamy, powdery vibe makes it especially cozy for cooler weather or wanting something soothing but still a little luxe. The projection is just right - noticeable, but not overwhelming - and it lasts all day without fading into the background.
If you’re into gourmands but want something a little more sophisticated and less sweet-shop, Santal Calling is worth checking out. And if you ever want to tweak it, Ex Nihilo’s customization option means you can play around and add your own twist next time. For now, I’m loving the original - creamy, powdery, and quietly addictive.
